In the very centre of the Old Town, at the end of Vitosha Street, Plovdiv’s Lapidarium is to be found. It is situated in a small square, shaped up by a double fortress wall, part of which dates back to the early Byzantine era, preserved and exposed to a height of 1 m. The construction technique is opus mixtum, which means that horizontal layers of stone alternate with five-row layers of brick. In this space the Regional Archaeological Museum in Plovdiv exhibits stone exhibits: fragments of columns, friezes, stone plates with epigraphs – archaeological evidence of the city’s past. Next to those a sculpture can be seen, the circular composition is of patinated iron disc with a spiral inscribed in it, a symbol of the circle of friends, the Bohemians of Plovdiv, that spiritualise with their intellectual and artistic talents the spaces of the Old Town. For years the Lapidarium has been a stage of various cultural events: concerts, celebrations and festivals; every year there is a Christmas tree with lights and it is a place where different communities gather and celebrate.
