Grozdov Pazar Square [The Grape Market Square]

The square is at the foot of the Danov Hill (Sahat tepe) and it is shaped up as a small garden where the statue of Joseph Schnitter is to be found, an architect and an engineer, who has greatly contributed to the contemporary cityscape and architecture in Plovdiv; there is also a monument to the Independent Bulgarian State. In the past, however, that was a market where people traded in grapes and wine, thus, the Grape Market name was attached to it and a residential area sprang up around. Up to the 1950s there was a bus station there and coaches provided the connection with the surrounding villages and towns in Plovdiv region. In the vicinity there are key locations associated with the cultural past and present of the city: the Orpheus Outdoor Cinema, the Centre of Radio and Television (Plovdiv), the Aleko Konstantinov School (previously called Andrew Carnegie).
