Old Town
This municipal area is well known to Plovdivians. Old Town is the popular name attached to the architecturally historical reserve Ancient Plovdiv. It is situated on three of the hills in Plovdiv: Nebet tepe, Dzhambaz tepe and Taksim tepe, sometimes referred to as Trimontium. The Old Town has been evolving for centuries and it brings together the spirit and architecture of different eras: Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Bulgarian Revival Period. Changes occurred in 1956 when the residential area was given the status of an architecturally historical reserve. Bulgaria and UNESCO signed an agreement specifying the status of the Ancient Plovdiv reserve in 2004. It was added to the tentative UNESCO list of sites of world heritage. he Old Town accommodates quite a few of the tourist sites that attract visitors from around the world. This is where one can see the Roman theatre, a number of Revival Period houses and churches, the Ethnographic Museum and many more architectural monuments of culture.
