Sheker mahala (Sugar neighbourhood)

The neighbourhood Sheker mahala (from Turkish şeker, which means sugar) is the second biggest ethnic neighbourhood in Plovdiv. It is situated in the northwestern part of town, close to the new industrial zone. The so called Russian market is in its vicinities. The residents are considered predominantly Roma but 4/5 of them identify themselves as Turkish. In official sources territories in this neighbourhood are referred to as Todor Kableshkov or Benkovski. These are linked to the construction of a residential area Todor Kableshkov, i.e. 80 new residential buildings and the attached infrastructure, financed by European programmes in 2004.
